Title: OzHadou.net and forum updates
Post by: Gamogo on July 06, 2011, 06:56:44 PM
Hi guys,

We're slowly chipping away at some new features for the forum which tie-in with the yet-to-be-released front page.

This will be a place where we let you know of new features as they roll into place. I'll update this post as new stuff becomes available.

18th April, 2012:

- Added front page comment system driven by Disqus (testing)

7th July:

- Event Registration

Forum members now have the ability to register for events added to the calendar. This is particularly handy for organisers to acertain a list of attendants and also get a list of player names and so on.

When mods and event organisers create a new calendar entry or link an announcement to the calendar, a bunch of registration fields become available. This includes registration duration, cut off date, registration agreement message, etc.

For users, when you visit a post or calendared event, a "Register" button appears at the top. Clicking this effectively 'registers' your interest in the event allowing organisers to generate player lists and gauge how many mashers they can expect.

Please give this option a try as I expect it'll make event organisation a little less painful. If you encounter any problems, please let me know.

6th July:

- Live updates to private messages and posts

As you receive new PMs and replies to your posts and topics, a little ajax applet will appear in the upper right corner of the site that allows quick access to the new messages and posts. This is a live feed connected to your account, so you can see messages and posts directed at you personally. To see this in action, ask someone to send you a PM (or reply/quote your posts).

- Calendar for community events

You will notice the 'Calendar' link in the nav bar towards the top of the forum next to 'My Messages.' Clicking on this will take you to the OzHadou calendar, which gives a run-down of events and goings on within the community. Clicking on a calendar event will take you to the post detailing the event where discussion (and eventually event registration) will be available. The link for the calendar is: http://forum.ozhadou.net/index.php?action=calendar

Forum moderators and event organisers have the permission to add posts to the calendar. You have two options here:

1.) At the bottom of posts, click 'Link to Calendar' - this will then present you with options for publishing the event to the calendar, including start date, duration and a description. The linked post is then made accessible via the calendar day so visitors can then go to the post to get details and view the discussion surrounding the event.

The new front page has a section that is automatically populated with upcoming events for the current month so at a glance you will be able to see what is going on within the community. Clicking these events on the front page will then take you the the threads detailing them with associated discussion. The new front page we hope to have ready soon. Mods - please note that only posts in the 'Tournament Announcements' and 'Casual Event Announcements' should be linked for the sake of consistency. If your permissions are lacking here, please let me know.

2.) If you are a mod or an event organiser, when you visit the calendar you can click on a day and you will then be presented with a form to fill out your event details which will automatically create both a post and a calendar event for your event.

So what goes in the calendar and what posts get flagged as calendar linked events? Pretty much anything that you feel involves the community in your respective areas. Tournaments, meets, gatherings, etc. Things that you feel the community should know about that involves getting together or involving others. Examples being Shadowloo Showdown, OHN, Boxhill, 99York, Couchwarriors, etc. Another good example might be active streams you fire up ('sup Bugs!) and so on.

I only ask that we try to maintain some presentation consistency. So prefix your events with [MELB] or [SYD] or [QLD] etc. Everyone seems to do this anyway, so lets keep that ball rolling.

I have also added an "Upcoming Events" section in the forum info center which appears at the bottom of all the available sub-forum lists.

More stuff soon. If you encounter any issues with these features, please PM me or post in this thread. If you have any feature suggestions by all means sing out.

- New profile fields

Added profile fields for Steam and Games for Windows to accommodate details for those playing SSFIV AE on PC. To add these details, click 'Profile > Forum profile' and add your details in the fields displayed.

Sorry, I've had to kill off the live message and reply notifier as it was kicking the crap out of the server that hosts the forums :/

Would it be too much trouble to either have an RSS feed of the calendar, oreven better, an iCal feed?

Hi guys,

I've put together a rough implementation of a commenting system for the front page's articles. (Please excuse the sketchy CSS for now, as the replacement front page is still a work in progress and yet to be formally released.) Though for now this ought to do the trick.

http://www.ozhadou.net

The comment system uses Disqus rather than the stock Wordpress comments due to some historical back-end incompatibilities. The bonus is that it allows you to authenticate and leave comments via a number of popular social systems you're likely already a member of, such as Facebook, OpenID, Google+, Twitter and Yahoo!

Please give this a shot if you're inclined to check out the front page from time to time. As always, please let me know if anything breaks or doesn't work as expected.

- Shane

In light of recent, er, 'events' I've enabled post reporting.

If you feel a post is offensive or disrupts the general tone of the place, feel free to click the 'Report to Moderator' link in the footer of posts.

Please don't abuse this feature and use common sense when giving it a mash. This link is also throttled so you can't go hogwild and report every bozo in a thread. Note that using this feature doesn't translate to an automatic ban/post delete/public flaying - its simply a notifier for the moderators that finds itself in a bucket for review.

Hopefully nobody has to use this feature though!

Added spoiler tags to the custom BBCode.

To use these, wrap your spoiler text the following tags:

Code: [Select]
[spoiler]secret things![/spoiler]
Which results in:

secret things!

You can also customise the spoiler labels. For example:

Code: [Select]
[spoiler=Oh god don't click this]Secret herbs and spices.[/spoiler]
Which results in:

Secret herbs and spices.

Alternatively, you can click the "Sp" icon in the WYSIWYG panel to generate the required tags. Or, type your message, highlight it and THEN click the "Sp" icon to spoil/hide it.

August 9th, 2012:

- Added an 'ignore' option on user posts (bottom right hand corner).

Once you ignore users, their forum avatar and details are removed and the content of their posts appears as 'You are ignoring this user. Show me the post.'

'Show me the post' is a selectable link that displays their comment should you wish to see it anyway. Next to this is an 'unignore' option which allows you to remove them from your shit list should you decide to become best buddies again.

Title: Re: OzHadou.net and forum updates
Post by: Gamogo on September 25, 2012, 11:50:09 PM
September 22nd, 2012:

- Pushed new ozhadou.net site live
- Implemented final SMF > Wordpress comment bridge (potentially buggy, still tweaking)
- Implemented live stream updates on front page (potentially buggy, still tweaking)
- Implemented news ticker for forums reflecting front page updates with comments (potentially buggy, still tweaking)
- Latest comments and forum discussion featured on front page

There are two keys aspects to this update. First being Spencer's fantastic restyling of the website with updated visuals and a consistent presentation style. Second being a unified authentication bridge between the front page and the forums to tie all commenting and user generated activity together. Your forum accounts now allow you to post on the forums and on the front page without having to login nor register additional accounts. All existing cookie data should carry across seamlessly.

You will also notice an area for 'Live Streams' that is automatically populated with active streams. If you have a stream you would like added to this list, please let me know. I have added a number of popular channels, though I anticipate there are others. Some time back I requested Australian hosted streams of which I have added (SNL, LanSmash, etc).

A lot of changes have gone into these updates so I'm expecting bugs, particularly with the commenting and authentication system. This might present itself by way of weird cookie errors and so on. If you encounter these, please let me know via a PM (http://forum.ozhadou.net/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=1607) or by replying to this thread.

October 4th, 2012:

- Buffed Kappa
- Added Gentlemen's group
- Cookie fix (SMWP auth, c.parent)
- Cookie smash. Ignore functionality has issues. To review
- Cookie smash. Return to thread after posting appears broken. (Profile > Forum profile > Look and Layout > Uncheck 'Return to topics...')
- SMWP plugin updates, reworked to full template

4th November 2012:

- Cookie smasher found (implement WP fetch iframe due to WP cookie conflict? - todo)
- Added live chat ala Fighterbase

A fix is coming soon for the cookie bug that is breaking collapse memory and some defined preferences (return to thread on reply for example). Turns out I'm doing something stupid juggling SMF and Wordpress cookie data.

IRC chat via Mibbit has been added to the forum. Selecting the 'Chat' link from the bar at the top of the page takes you to a Mibbit chat applet that automatically connects to EFNet and joins the #oh_test channel as your forum name. Testing for now. Could be fun, could be a nightmare. Play nice.

Post by: Gamogo on November 06, 2012, 05:19:37 PM
6th November, 2012:

- Ditched profile info text in favour of selectable icons. Clicking these takes you to the relevant locations (Steam page, XBL/PSN profiles, Fighterbase) rather than it just being static information
- pogchamp and bort emotes added, cleaned up displayed noise
- Unbound cookie from just the child domain. Applicable to other (and TLD) domains also (i.e. ozhadou.net). Catch is that this requires the current session to be logged out and logged back in again to force cookie recreation
- DB and static clone for fresh a staging area due to feature and version creep
- Added chat (http://www.ozhadou.net/chat/) module. Experimental
- ALT tag bug. Fix it you lazy shit

15th November, 2012:

I've finally managed to get all my (long overdue) bug fixes in place. Apologies for the delay on these.

- Fixed cookie smasher
- Board collapse memory fixed
- Landing page stats collapse memory fixed
- Return to last thread post on reply fixed
- Ignore function fixed

- Externally fetched ozhadou.net news updates are now called via an iframe so as to speed up forum page renders

Please issue a CTRL+F5 on your browser to force a page load that includes these changes.

Hey Gamago, just a rollback feature request if possible.

Hiding the gamertags into hyperlink images really streamlines the forum look but it's not so intuitive for memory poor old folks like myself.

Sometimes forum name and gamertags don't match up and looking left to see gamertags was great for those that relate fgc stuff to the people they play online.

Interesting point. I've made a small (crude) change which I'll tidy up later on. Is that a little better? I figure it satisfies both sides of the coin, though I feel it may be a little noisy.

- Re-instated front page updates. I suspect this is buggy due to WP + SMF cookies and CSS merging. The ignore function is broken and replying to thread sends you back to the forum index being two examples, among other problems. Gamogo,

Whatever happened to the old forum? I did a search and found this thread with the link, but it doesn't work.

The old forum was decommissioned a few months back due to security concerns. The old (and discontinued) code it was using was rife with security vulnerabilities and was constantly subjected to Javascript exploits and injections. Because it was an unused resource I packed it away. Technically the data still exists though it will take some work to reinstate.

This is something I'd like to do to preserve a bunch of history, though its a low priority right now.

16th September, 2015:

- Buff: Added HTML5 player support to LS (forum + front page). In the forum header or on the front page, next to live Twitch channel station links you will now see a '[5]' link. Click this instead to view the channel in an HTML5 rendered tab rather than Twitch's (for now) default Flash player. Does NOT work under Firefox. Chrome only.

The catch is that chat isn't available (Twitch has not made it available yet via this method) though the benefits of the HTML5 player are kinda nice.
