Title: ST (S*it Talk) Episode 1
Post by: spidercarnage on August 22, 2011, 11:43:31 PM
Due to popular demand (I canít believe I am writing this) Ace, KG and myself are back with S*hit Talk Episode 1. On this episode we are joined by Sydneyís very own Goswu and Melbourneís Loki to talk about a number of different topics. Unlike the pilot we had a shit ton of bad luck recording this episode as everyoneís internet was being shit, it took us almost three and a half hours to record an hour and twenty one minutes of content. The good news is that we shaved off about 40 minutes off the pilot as we did get some complaints that it was a bit too long, the bad news is due to a lot of drops the show is a bit disjointed as people keep dropping from the Skype conversation.

As always there is a severe language warning on this podcast so if you get easily offended, donít like swearing or in general are in touch with your feelings then this is not the podcast for you and I strongly advise that you donít listen to it.

So now with any further delay you can download episode 1 here:

These 2 SHIT TALK EPISODES make me laugh so much. SO SO MUCH.

[rant]One thing I want to point out, I don't like some of the mentality displayed in this episode. The mentality I'm talking about is: "Johnny, Tom and ToXY went to EVO. The rest went to Vegas." If you guys already believe you're ONLY going there to lose then of course you've already lost. And you wonder why your scene (and I don't mean Sydney only but Australia wide) struggles to get better because you're always hindered by "What's the point? Johnny is going to win anyway..."

I know what I'm saying probably applies to some/few of you but never the less it's still poor thinking. One of the reasons the Tekken scene in Sydney is at the level where it's at now because when we had a world class player come live in Sydney we didn't give up and be like: "He's so Korean. How will we EVER beat him?" No. We tried our best to learn from him and improve as much as we can. And the result? It just solidified our resolve even more that outside of Japan and Korea, WE (not Sydney but AUSTRALIA) are the next best country in Tekken.

Excuse the rant but the last thing I want to see is ANY AUSTRALIAN SCENE being damaged and the worst thing about is that the damage is self inflicted.[/rant]

I agree with you Youssef. To be fair it's hard to meet up with a lot of SF guys because everyone prefers online to Arcade. Tekken's online mode and console version is a betrayal as you already know so seriou players only have a choice of going to an arcade to play it. It isn't so with SF, making it harder to learn from each other (IMO).

Not me. I went to win EVO.
Didn't happen, but that was the plan.

To be fair Yousef I don't think most people actually have that attitude when it comes to their matches, Australian humour is pretty self deprecating, it doesn't mean we aren't going to try, just that we're not full of ourselves.

No Excuses needed, I agree whole heartedly with what you said. If you have the mentality I am going to lose then you are already setting yourself back, but we also have to be realistic. I canít speak for anyone else but my goal for going to Evo was not to go 0 and 2 in SF4, Marvel and to play as much ST as I possibly could. I went 2 Ė 2  in SF4 which I am pretty proud of because I have a hard time taking SF4 seriously. I am a huge scrub in SF4. I didnít play marvel as it was on at the same time as the High rollers ST tournament in which I went 3 Ė 2. I am pretty disappointed in my ST performance, I should have done better. I choked big time against a Ryu player which sent me to loses. I had to fight Arturo Sanchez and I got beat pretty badly, mainly because I have never fought that kind of Sim player before. But going to Evo has motivated me to figure out why GGPO has such horrible imput delay on my PC (still working on it) and to start playing ST online more.

Again I donít want to speak for people who went over for Evo but I am pretty sure most of them had their own goals that I hope they achieved during the trip. Also please remember that going to Evo is a lot more than just going to play in the main tournament there is heaps to see and do especially this year with the great side panels they had, the sponsor booths, the BYO section etcÖ

On a final note this show was a bit more serious than the pilot episode due to some of the topics that we had on the agenda and we will return to a more wacky show next time.

Also what Loki said in the post above.

I wasn't going to comment on Somniac's post because I didn't fully get the gist of it but I am going to comment on what you said with a simple: Are you serious? Are you SERIOUSLY serious???

That's a shame, because I really enjoyed it. :(

This episode reminded me of AlphaISM radio only better, because it was local and actually had some good serious discussion topics intermixed with the banter and laughs. I gave up on AlphaISM years ago when more content-focused stuff started turning up, as I felt they spent too much time on juvenile content. I'm sure there are people who love that for what it is, but I found I wasn't one of them.

I thought this episode had fantastic content and I'd love to hear more like it in the future. I really like that it's a joint-project between Melbourne and Sydney. (See, we can work together if we want to. :P) I enjoyed hearing Goswu and Loki's thoughts in addition to those of the hosts around Evo 2011 and the "Sydney vs. Melbourne situation".

A couple of feedback points on the subject matter.I hope S*it Talk does become more than just random call outs, as I think a blend of topical content and good humour is something the scene in general has been lacking ever since Wake-Up SRK took over the "serious" side of US fighting game community discussions.

PS: ST is an annoying abbreviation because it makes me think of Super Turbo. :P Maybe something like S-TLK would avoid confusion?

Ziggy I want to make a quick point that perhaps has been misunderstood from Shit Talk.

Guys like Spidercarnage who donated significant amounts of cash to Shadowloo Showdown are the exception, not the rule. Especially with the amount that Igor donated.

The majority of funds that went towards running Shadowloo Showdown came directly from the Shadowloo team's pockets. Ali, Dave, Sol, Pyro etc.

Thousands and thousands of dollars, and not to mention man-hours.

It's kind of a disservice to them to think that the majority of Shadowloo's money came purely from donations.

Yes I'm sure the donations must've helped- as well as meetups like Deakin Uni and CCH that were also were used as fundraising events for SS. In that sense you could say that SS was supported by the entire Melbourne community.

I think the proximity of the dates was the biggest problem, and certainly not everybody in the Melbourne community donating too much money to the event.

i found some time to listen to this finally (was expecting another 2 hour podcast ;D) and found it really interesting.

I completely agree melb/syd rivalry was fun that got out of hand, and continued collaborations like this is awesome to clear the air. good shit spider :p:

For example I didn't realise sydney thought melb was boycotting ozh. i'm certain this wasn't intentional from the community as a whole, and highly doubt it was done by individual people.

Like ziggy i actually like the more serious and informative nature of the podcast.

Hey Guys sorry for the slow reply I been visiting family overseas and arrived back in Aus yesterday. Thanks for the feedback Ziggy, we are still working on the format of the show and I donít think we will just have random callouts. Itís just a matter of structuring the show and finding interesting topics and guests. This is one of the reasons why I read all feedback/comments that people leave. To tell you the truth I like the more serious side of the show that we did and finding the right balance between comedy and seriousness on the show is going to be a challenge which I think KG, Ace and I will face as we continue working on the format and structure.

On a second note mutton pretty much cleared up everything that I wanted to say on my comment on the show about SS funding. My comment was based on the people who I spoke to about donations to SS2k11. As it turned out all the people who I spoke to about donations actually donated and based on some of the things that Ali told me who he was still expecting to donate I presumed that a significant number of the Melbourne community donated money, which turned out not to be true. I would personally like to apologise to the Shadowloo guys and any other affiliated parties that worked on SS2k11. My comments where an educated assumption (if such a thing exists).

Secondly I would like to apologise to the listeners as it was not my intention to misinform people about SS2k11ís donations and their funding strategies. I am glad that I got called out about it and I wish that more people would come and speak to me about any issues that they have with the content that I or any of my fellow co-hosts produce.

Finlay I think the abbreviation ST works but I think we will most likely just call it S*it Talk as ST dose remind people of Super Turbo.

Once again thanks for listening and we will be starting work on episode 2 in the near future.
