Title: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: Cabjoy on July 14, 2012, 11:07:43 AM
Hi all,

I know a bunch of us in the KOF XIII contacts thread like to post match videos and combo videos and things like that to show each other from time to time, so I thought a dedicated thread to this kind of thing would be the way to go so we can keep the contact thread about contacts. :)

Since we're a fairly tightly knit group of players, I figure the more we post informative and interesting videos, as well as just talk about the game itself, the more it'll help us develop as players. Since, you know, it's not like we all get to actually PLAY the game that often unfortunately.

Hope you guys are keen for some KOF talk!

I'll kick things off with this combo vid from Combonauts:

You guys have probably seen this but I'll post it anyway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJcoUuKQ-Kg

It's the first part of the Team Korea vs Team Mexico.

Main reason I posted though, is I wanted to know if any of you know how the hell the Koreans are landing an uppercut with EX Iori after the first two hits of the Rekkas. Is it a 1F link or something? Because it feels almost impossible to do for me.

The technique is to cancel to 2nd rekka into a super, but past the super cancel timing. If done correctly, it will shorten the recovery of the 2nd rekka, allowing for additional followups such as st.C, dp+C etc.

Seems to be only on hit, because on block, the 3rd rekka just comes out.

Zerp has recently tweeted top players' opinions of who is strong or weak in King of Fighters XIII, listed by players on his twitter including his own opinion back at 13th of July.

I am also going to bold and underline Karate mentions on the list for lols.
Note that Tengu = Karate.

China's XiaoHai: Kim, Duo, Chin (if you don't understand the matchup). ... This list seems very influenced by EVO results.

Execution/patience for learning links etc seems to be my biggest weakness for KOF. Who would you say are good options for low-execution characters? I spoke to Kyokugen about this at the last YSB, he said Maxima was a good choice (who I'm happy with) and maybe Kula. I'm currently running with Max, King, Billy, basically I want to replace King since I feel I'm not using her to the best potential (mainly using her as a zoning character atm).

Regular Kyo is low execution (IMO anyway) and has ridiculous damage output. I would give him a go and ruin people's day with jump d.c

Has anybody been able to consistently hit the DP~DP plink shortcut? For example, apparently if you do DP+C~D with Yuri (DP drive cancel to demon flip) that should come out with only the single DP input. I can only get it when i mash so i have no idea in regards to the timing.

Yea the single input plink dp has an odd timing to it, I got in around 1 in 3 when I tried it a while back. I find just doing dp+C into dp+D is easier.

I apologize for probably posting this a bit too late, but there's a Game Versus KOFXIII CLIMAX stream happening right now. Unfortunately, the stream on my end is inconsistent but you can probably enjoy the archive. If it is not archived, you can check out the latest archive dated on the 15th of July at the very least.

This is different from the teams tournament that they do on Saturdays. Generally, these streams are referred to as 'match meet with live broadcast commentary'.

May 2nd 2012, Game Versus KOFXIII archive (first KOFXIII CLIMAX stream) - Matches with commentary: Part 1 (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/22289194), Part 2 (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/22287568), Part 3 (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/22289194).

Hey Zuzu, what was the notation for that Mr Karate combo you were tellin' me about the other day? I know what it looks like, and it looks really simple, but I've been having a lot of trouble hitting the D,df,f A/C after the air hlf frd B. Doesn't wanna work out for me :|

Pretty sure I'm gonna fuck most of those characters off for YSB anyway though, and just stick with Andy, Vice, Clark, Claw and Ash.

Hey Zuzu, what was the notation for that Mr Karate combo you were tellin' me about the other day? I know what it looks like, and it looks really simple...

It is easily the hardest/most annoying part of Karate. I have no problems performing this relatively close to the corner after one rep but midscreen is annoying. lol

st.C, f+B [HD] st.C, f+B, [qcf+A (HDC) dp+C~A+B, hcf,uf+B] x4, qcb,hcf+AC

In the corner, you can substitute tiger knee Hien (hcf+B) for his A version of his FB. It does make the combo easier to time. If you do decide to go with tiger knee Hien, from my experience the timing is more lenient in the corner than it is in midscreen.

I like doing tiger knee Hien 'cause it looks cooler but it has messed up my timing for the midscreen HD combo. :)

You can try practicing the drive cancel first before doing the full HD combo.

st.C, f+B xx qcf+A (DC) dp+C~A+B, hcf,uf+B, qcf+A (DC)...

I practised this extensively before practicing the HD combo. The thing with me is that if I land the qcf+A after the tiger knee Hien during HD mode, I can get the full HD combo starting from the corner, no problem. Holding down the A input in my qcf+A helps sometimes.

Sadly, I could do the midscreen HD combo 7/10 times before I slacked off and started doing random shit in training mode.  ;D ;D ;D
All you need to do is practise more. :D

Edit: Alternatively, if you don't mind losing out a bit of damage, omitting the f+B after the HD activation makes the combo so much easier. It does 6 less points of damage starting from st.C and finishing it with NM.

Also, it seems like MADKoF13's youtube channel is starting to upload videos after 2 months and so weeks of inactivity.

So Hwa's A version Dragon Back Breaker is a 1F throw right ?

So I did the back breaker to Robert low D, and kara cancel into his command throw and won.

I don't understand what the deal is there, I am unable to find move information for Ryuren Geneikyaku, I didn't think the move was that good.

Any ideas ??

I was having a play around in training with King and Kyo to decide who I should continue with, and i think I'm leaning towards Kyo. Once I found that I can use Cr. C instead of st. C for his jump in combo into that double low kick it was so much easier. I found that the timing required for Kings basic combo was much tighter than Kyo's and I probably would drop it more often.

I'll stick to cheese with Maxima for now but i'll see what's best to use for Kyo and work on getting more consistency with Billy's BnB combos.

I would recommend watching a lot of the Japanese Kyo's and observing his neutral game. In training mode he appears to be quite straight forward but it really helps to know the correct application of all his tools to open people up. st.a / st.d are sick pokes for stopping pressure but it's really important to know what button to hit at what range (my kyo got blown up last YSB because I didn't know)

fun fact:

Duo Lon c.lp goes under Kyo's sf.D

Note - I suppose that makes Duo Lon a little broken but he does no damage. Thats another thing I like about this game. Some characters have weird shit like this but winning with these traits aren't enough for them to win all day.

Apparently the combos break guard before the opponent can gain one bar!

I was wondering what the purpose was for the video when I watched it but for the reason mentioned it seems like a pretty good one. Even if they gained 1 meter when their guard is about to be crushed you can tell they're going to want to Guard Cancel something.

Also, MadKOF regarding his thoughts on the EVO competition. Translations courtesy of Koogle--

Who were your toughest opponents at EVO? (Not including members of your own team)
What were the reasons they were tough?

MadKOF:
Luis Cha, Reynald, and BALA.
Luis Cha was much stronger than any other opponents I played on the first day of the tournament. I underestimated him a little bit in the first game because I had easier time winning until I played against him.
Reynald was my first opponent in the top 8 matches. I was really nervous and had tough time playing against Reynald.
As expected from the best in North America, BALA was very skilled and was a tough opponent.

I also wouldn't say Kensou feels like he's a bottom tier character, like I read Reynald thought he was... maybe I only say that because he's really basic/simple to use.

He does have some really stumpy little limbs and normals I guess.

Kensou gets demolished by character's that shut-down his only decent normals (cr.D, CD, j.CD). If he knocks you down and you have to block a fireball he's a monster, he's got set-ups for days. I can see Reynald's view though, his normals are comparatively ass and his damage output w/o meter + corner is pretty low (but he builds it pretty quickly and corner carries well)

I dont know if you guys can take anything from this but its just a training tip that I came up with for 2x hcb motions for 2P side. Its specific I know but maybe it can applied/adapted to other difficult motions that cant be done with shortcuts. When timing is involved I find them extra difficult because the motion itself is taxing.

With ralf I want to cancel the last punch of my qcbhcf+B/D super into my neomax when I'm doing my HD combos. The neomax is a 2x hcb motion and usually I miss one direction and I do this pretty consistently on the 2P side. To counteract this I do hcb+A/B/C/D, hcb AC. The inputs for the 1st hcb are unecessary but for some reason it just works with my muscle memory better because I am used to just hcb by itself.

For some reason this works for me so I thought I would share it since I've heard motions some ways are difficult for others.

The interesting (and worrying) part is that Beni can kill you only using 1 stock and full hd gauge... but execution looks extremely strict.

Frame data on Excel. The downside is that everything is in Japanese but it is incredibly neat. ;D

@Alexk: Did you see Choysauce's Athena setup at 0:42:20? He does a back throw, walks a few, cross up hop f+B, EX qcb+K, run, st.C xx f+B whiff into her command grab to reset. I haven't been paying attention to Athena much but I'm having fun right now trying to do her bouncing butt loops to the sky. ;D

Ah, I forgot to post the link to the video. It's from The Run Back (http://www.twitch.tv/leveluplive/b/328912467).

I think this is the follow-up video from KOFXIII tournament from Suzhou, China that I posted earlier:

Lion King Arcade Monthly KOF13 Tournnamet Top4 from Suzhou, China on August 18th 2012
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNN5evGu4DM

From MMCafe's Professor: "Woo/Uuu from the "Kansai vs Kaoru&Woo" videos released his tier chart. This is the guy who Kaoru said was one of the top 5 players in Japan." Link to tier chart (http://www.mmcafe.com/tiermaker/kof13/index.html#ya0-trh8dxlwa4l7666ugz9u8khn75ove7anef5ncrim4oa63scw50c7cbozagg7akoy6ndxfv5k2rbn3xj6jwng85eh6zix7ln7c4na75bc8k8041iudzkj73p0ci887fcz7e93dbcw9yej8ngz5v-bkf-naUUU) Link to source (http://www.mmcafe.com/cgi-bin/forums/bbs/messages/13361.shtml#61716)

Quote
Woo/Uuu bases his tiers on the following conditions.

1. How strong the character's normal attacks are.
2. How easy it is when the character is on the defense.
3. Whether the character has a move to retaliate in situations (a good invulnerable attack)
4. Whether the character has a 1F grab.
5. Whether the character doesn't have a huge flaw. (Like Ash's Sans-Culotte giving way too much meter)

Characters with these points he placed to the right (Well-rounded/stable), while characters without them he placed to the left (have faults). Also, Characters that are easier to do practical damage in matches he placed higher in tier, while those that can't he placed lower.

Takuma is on the left upper side because he can do a lot of damage but he's instable. Athena is relatively high-right because of her damage output from throws and her EX teleport. Overall, he finds Kim to be the most well-rounded top tier.

Yeah its great for perspective and makes tonnes of sense.

A quote from the alternating guard video from Laban:

"There's throw invincibility in general on normal wake-up in KOF XIII. According to a recently translated Arcadia article brought to my attention in an SRK thread, there is 11 frames of throw invul on wake-up. But, there is 0 when coming up from a quick rise. Then 6 frames of invul after a hit reset."

Other random stuff;

This is Goro's sprite (http://i.imgur.com/kcYTV.png) when he goes YUKUZO and before he goes for his epic ground pound.

This what happens when you get DP+KK collision in a Billy mirror match - this was late night casuals between myself (Random/Random/Shen) and MadeManG74 (KO'd/KO'd/Billy). The whiff DP+K was a poor read against Billy's f+A on my side.. lol. Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=480XaOP83_w)

@vlade: Oh, you've been playing KOF13? Welcome. :-)

Thanks  8)

Yes defeintly enjoy KOF13 (my favourite 2D fighter). In fact I am a KOF player first then... all the other Neo games, and then SF2/SF4 second. A little rusty at KOF atm, but! I am getting back on the scene again

Ah alright, good to see more players getting into the game and to see you enjoy the game. Hoping for growth of the game in Canberra. ^^
I guess you're going to play grapplers and Karate? :S

Lately, KCE has been uploading more videos so I've included that into the video compliation post with an italicized Edit, most of them are from nicovideo - Tokido vs. Oogosho, Tokido vs. Picnic (Karate, Saiki, Shen) and Picnic vs. Dune (Karate, Kyo, Iori). I have also included nico uploads of Tokido matches from Brazil too.

@Cerillos: The best part is when Blitztank goes D: when the girl, Kanae command grabs and twirls the tank around. :D
Also, the third part of the Myu concept matches are up today as well with Azuki Neko using Robert/Kim/Takuma.

Edit:

I stumbled across another cache of videos back from EVO from a Japanese blog. It was mainly Mago games with Ricardo/Ricky Diaz (you may know him from The Runback) and against two others, Carlos and Joaquin in AE. Ricardo is known to play Maxima on point, Takuma then Shen.

Hahaha, pretty much - Terry, Andy, K, Kyo, Takuma/Mr Karate, Ryo, Robert, Kim, and Goro Daimon!

And I agree with you, I hope it does grow not only in Canberra but the rest of Australia,  Sydney is looking pretty good at the moment

Slowly and slightly growing in QLD. One stupidly strong player and the rest of us trying to catch up.

@Vlade: This whole time I thought you were an ST specialist, didn't even know you played KOF.

@Tom, yeah definetly play KOF matey, I remember when 94 hit the arcades, ST was about a year old then, people gradually turned to the new series over the years. Yeah about the QLD players, I'm sure I ran into a player a couple times on GGPO, KOF2002 lobby, whomever it was they were very good (for any standard), they said they were from QLD.

@Spencer, thanks and I will do, also good stream tonight!

Impressive use of Maxima's autoguard... he can counter every single special movement, including neomaxes!  :o

Ps: I was wondering where I had listened that song before and suddenly I remembered that was the song of Blues Bloody/Golden Hulk, a character from an old wrestling game called "Exciting Hour/Mat Mania". So I decided to look the original song and after a extensive search finally I got it, the name's song is "Vibrations", by James Last. (yeah, I'm a sort of vgm geek)  :P

Arguably The Best, the Buttonsmash video was posted here (http://forum.ozhadou.net/index.php?topic=7747.msg1274195#msg1274195), second post from yours as you can (not) see. So as a precaution that you will not miss the KOFXIII videos posted from last weekend's BAM, I have taken subtle (http://forum.ozhadou.net/index.php?topic=7766.msg1275232#msg1275232) measures for you to notice. :)

I watched the "Teach me" ASH tutorial that was linked on Orochinagi.

Character specific 1050 damage 3 bar against Raiden = awesome.

Will be learning all his sans combos in the coming month :D

Ash looks like a fun character to use (well, the whole cast looks fun) and I had a play around with him the other day. Are the sans combos hard to do? As in, do they take really specific timing?

In any event, i'm going to make a point to stick with Billy, Maxima and Kyo until I can get consistently good with their combos and abilities before going and learning anyone else seriously.

Ash is a ridiculous man.

Probably about as execution heavy as a char get's in 13.

Judging from the games yesterday night, you are also interested in Takuma?
Title: Re: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: MadeManG74 on October 05, 2012, 09:04:16 AM
Yeah, Takuma was one of those characters I wanted to learn when I first picked up the game, he seems like a solid character and probably less execution heavy than Mr Karate.

I can't figure out his f+B~Charge kicks but instead I'll do a qcf+D sometimes. It's not as useful but it works. I can also do a Jump D, cr C, charge kicks if I need to juggle, but it seems the jump D needs to be really late to connect the cr C as opposed to a st C.

But yeah, overall I'm trying to just play Billy, Maxima and Kyo as much as possible to level them up a bit. I'm hitting Maxima's combos more consistently now at least which is good.

Ash is so god damned fun! His more basic San's Coulotte combos aren't that bad, and shouldn't take too long to learn. But yeah he's still harder to use than most. Funny thing was I used to do his sans coulotte combos thinking I had to hold charge....

It become so much simpler when I realised that the point of sans coulotte was to remove the charge time haha. Ahh well, I always use Ash when I play for the fun of it, even if I'm not great with him :)

I've found Karate's combo execution relatively easier than Takuma, the hardest combo with Karate is his HD combo starting with with st.C, f+B [HD] st.C, f+B xx qcf+A... and omitting the second f+B makes the HD combo much easier to perform and finish. Karate gets more out of a cr.B/st.B compared to Takuma but lol hai command grab, so I view them as polar opposites of each other in that regard.

To do his st.C, f+B, db~f+D, you'll have to do two things. One is to hit db immediately after you hit f+B and must be charging long before the f+B comes out. Two is to realize that you can link db~f+D from f+B fairly late, it feels like a while after f+B has hit. Otherwise you can do the ghetto version and do cr.C to db~f+D as you mentioned, although cr.C is 3 frames slower (st.C is 4f).

I recommend practising st.C, f+B, db~f+D after the command grab. Good practice.

From a st.C, f+B xx qcf+D, you can link a cr.A into EX Hien (db~f+BD). It is a 1f link.

The HDC from db~f+B to qcf+D is very paced to do. Don't speed up/slow down or risk execution error.

TLDR; if you want to learn Takuma's combos, get these elements down (from highest difficulty to lowest IMO):

qcf+D, cr.A, db~f+BD
st.C, f+B, db~f+D
db~f+B [HDC] qcf+D
db~f+B, st.C xx fbf+BD
db~f+D, db~f+B, db~f+B (from st.C/cr.C)

The game is far more visceral than SF4. You don't get 60 million years to plan your next move.

The game is far more visceral than SF4. You don't get 60 million years to plan your next move.

There are still though situations where you get a pre planned set up though. Beni's non ex command grab is a good example, can't be combo'd off so you get a solid pre determined mix up.

I love the fluidity of this game, always feels like you have a multitude of options at any one point (unless I'm stuck in a clark vortex, then I mostly just have the option of dying).

Some character's have lots of hard-knockdown based moves that let you work safejump type stuff if you're on the ball... most of Kim's combo enders hard knockdown and let you safejump (I'm too shit-tier to actually do it though)... Kensou's QCF+K Rekka ender though if you're positioned right you'd get more value off of meaty fireball pressure isntead.... Either Kyo's HCB+K or EX Kyo's rdp+K

Hahaha just realized my team is made up entirely of people that have hard knockdown stuff.  ;D
Title: Re: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: fkuspencer on October 17, 2012, 12:10:41 AM
As far as I know in this game, safejumps are guaranteed to be beaten by moves that start up in 2f and (in some cases, 'or' dependant on the setup, character and their hitboxes) invulnerable. Kyo's EX Orochinagi, Chin's counters and Goro's counter NM come into mind (provided that the attacker does not empty jump to beat the counter).

However, you can safe jump moves that start up slower and take advantage of your opponent without meter, especially if they require EX specials to counter the attacker's momentum (alternatively, vice versa for the opponent to spend their meter more for less dangerous hitconfirms) or for certain characters since they have no other options but block (or maybe roll) in the hard knockdown situation.

For example, Kim has many moves that end with hard knockdowns which allows to give him an abundance of safejump setups. Air qcb+K, heavy flashkick with d+D follow up, EX flashkick, NM and his throw. Using Goro as an example, if Kim lands his BnB from a far.D, cr.B, st.B, ff+A, air qcb+B against Goro - he can begin his lockdown for free, starting off with his safejump, hop A asap and begin his cr.B/st.B pressure.

If he presses something on wake up or from Kim's cr.B for counterhit, he could hitconfirm to the same combo, rinse and repeat. Or he could HD activate from his lights, end his HD combo with NM, slight pause, hop A - rinse and repeat. However, if Goro has 2HD and 3 stocks, he can raw activate his NM to catch Kim's hop A, provided that he does j.A. So, the defender must risk his resources to thwart Kim's momentum. Same principle for Andy and his NM.

However, there are some characters that can't do anything when they are put into that situation and are forced to block in a hard knockdown situation against Kim such as Terry and gets his shit pushed in. He may roll away but Kim can always chase him and hit/throw the vulnerable part of the roll. Therefore, safe jumps are particularly strong in this scenario and can be abused against these characters.

Edit: he meant something else... ah well, fuck it lol

As for the setups that Gutts contributed, I'm going to implement Mature's since I always wait and do a meaty fireball instead. Mix up the neutral jump with another scratch, run or fly to the air. lol
I'll try to remember the Benimaru ones when I get him on random select... :\
And I've seen those Duo Lon setups used in japanese KOFXIII play (Tengawa's).

i do safejumps in older kof. but its never like those in the vids where there's setup.

i do my safejump based on gut feel. like iori jump cd or jump c really low.

those vids are so....sf induced that i don't really understand whats the point of doing it.

some setup is legit and used. but heck couple of the vids looks like done by a sf minded player.

safejump is fine but safejump with those setup is unseen before....in my kof days at least.

I understand where you are coming from, the player played arcade KOFXIII and 2k2UM it seems.

Edit: Consider it as free blows on their guard guage. Having more options of attack is not a bad thing. ;D

considering that kof xiii engine is different from older kof's, its seems viable to have more (or less?) exploits. Unless you were really into kof back in the old days or knew where to get info from, all of people didnt know about safe jumps or setups at all. I think with sf4 showcasing "safejump" more widely, it makes sense that it would feel like an sf4 gimmick especially how they are done in xiii.

I do know that Colonov uses them and they do work (like kula's qcb+A combo ender is one of hers.) Since it more accessible to more of the roster then older kofs, that may also seem weird to some.

Hahaha just realized my team is made up entirely of people that have hard knockdown stuff.  ;D

Kim hop/hyper hop C usually works well off of any aerial QCB+A or flashkick.

Stricter than SF4 but I think they certainly have their uses, especially against people who get "too kof-ee" and just end up hopping or moving too much from their wakeups.

Also a few resets against the right characters i'd opt for safe jump setups depending on who i'm vsing.

All this being said, I'm still shit but I see the value in doing these =b

Same here, I jump based on gut and feel as well. It's been a staple for those that started really early (94/95)
We always knew that usually a super low hyper hop normal will be safe against most DPs, but the block stun varies so much so that some chars can reversal DP (Ryo is most versions) your normal ground poke after that.

A lot of chars have air moves which can trade with AA or super cancelled for invincibility frames. Now these aren't safe jumps but pretty safe to spam.

Nice links Spencer, a lot of stuff to implement into my own gameplay from those vids =)

I'm finding that if you don't speak Japanese the more in depth stuff is hard to come by.

Yeah I find dream cancel sort of patchy. Couldn't find anything on the Beni lightning loops. Like if you want to get the most amount of jump lightnings, then you hyper hop (db,d,df,f,uf), let go of the stick and input your attack. It may be there but I couldn't find it myself. Plus the youtube tutorial doesn't cover that either but its still very insightful!

Thats my review of dream cancel, anyway. I just look on youtube a lot and hope I come across some tech in English :/

And as you said there is knowing Japanese....

I mostly learn off from match videos (CafeID streams and Game Versus), tutorial videos, combo videos and leeching off the commentary from the bigger KOFXIII tournaments and the RunBack. Although when I learn a new character, DreamCancel and Shoryuken KOFXIII wiki is usually my background reading before fooling around with them in practice mode.

Also playing random select has helped me immensely (half the time spent on practice mode now is on random select). I can play with most of the cast on every team (in varying degrees of shit) but the Fatal Fury Team. :-[

The SRK Wiki has overlapping info with Dreamcancel, but for some chars, there are more.

You can try cyberfanatix as well.

Like if you want to get the most amount of jump lightnings, then you hyper hop (db,d,df,f,uf)

So that's how you get the full 5 reps!

I always cut it short at 4 and don't bother with the standing heavy fireball.

I'm not very good at this game, but somebody gave me similar advice as the bolded part, and it was really counterproductive. By far the most useful way to learn to do st.C, f+B, db~f+D for me was to do it while running forward (which is as close as to "neutral" as your getting) because that gives you a feel for how fast you have to press the f+B after the st.C, whereas if you do it from a jumpin, or off a comand grab, often you'll press the st.C slightly too early, and rely on the link leniancy for it to come out, but if that happens, you have to press the f+B later than you would from neutral, so I would be pressing the f+B at the same time after the st.C, and getting different results, and it was weirding me out, but I'm a lot better at now it after practicing it without that extra confusion.

I'm still arse at qcf+D, cr.A, db~f+BD and db~f+B, st.C xx fbf+BD, but I'm pretty happy just juggling into DM for now.

But remember to leave the stick at neutral at the end of the motion and then press A/C.

I'll post a few points for everyone's reference who are trying to figure this thing out. If there are any points to share it would be great to hear them.

Key points specifically on Benimaru's TK motion  Lightning Loops:

- if you hold u/f at the end of your motion (d/b, d, d/f, f, u/f) then you will get a normal jump TK and won't get the most out of your reps
- if you hold u ( or u/b, b, etc for that matter) at the end of your motion you won't get a TK  Raijinken. Beni will jump punch instead and you'll feel silly. Then benefit from this is that you'll reset them or land without hitting them...I think.
- if you end your motion with u, u/b, b (or whatever) after doing the hyper hop motion you will still get a TK Raijinken if you leave the stick at neutral before pressing A/C

A few other key things on the timing of the combo between reps:

- look for when Beni lands and his head bends down because that is when the recovery frames end for the TK Raijinken.
- don't try to end your combos with C if you're expecting to fail (more of note to self). Thats lame and you're subconsciously setting yourself up for failure. Sure if you get a standing C Raijinken it will save the combo but its still lame.
- after Benimaru Lancer, there is a huge arse recovery period and its where I make or break the combo. Since I now know how to hyper hop TK Raijinken, I have had a higher success rate transitioning from that part of the combo. Its really important if you want to LL off a throw.

A great tutorial for the overall tutorial on Beni's LLs. Doesn't teach you how to do most reps though.

Ah, I think I've seen that before in match videos and its an interesting way to do it. I tried it out before (and now) but ended up dropping more (and still...) because I suck. XD
I believe that I'm more used to visually hit-confirming the st.C after the command grab since the opposing character's arms dropped down from the guard crush sprite (I guess that's why SNKPLAYMORE gave Karate a guard crush move too? lol) to their idle position so I use that visual cue to help time my st.C then dial straight to f+B then to downback (I treat st.C, f+B to db like a Tekken string in speed, using the game's input buffer to minimize dropping the combo).

CafeID's Japan vs. Korea (in Game Versus due to change of plans) archive are up by the way. 8 parts, features Kensouzzang (owner of CafeID), Lacid, Dal-Tong and MadKOF against the names you see at Game Versus Nishinippori - 4 versus 20 (so so each player in Team Korea gets 5 lives). Team Korea also must play in a button layout they may not be used to as well (straying from the popular "Nike" layout in Korea - D/ABC).

I really wish I could do the stun combo, if only for the swag, but the double Rekka juggle after drive cancel has a much more finicky timing than it looks like and unless you're going for stun it scales so much that it's normally not a huge damage difference.

so tl:dr (actually read but still don't get it)

don't hold uf is the trick to getting 6 reps? i can get max 5 reps and its extremely difficult

Could be wrong but my interpretation of the motion is: d/b,d,d/f,f,u/f,u, Return to Neutral.

Don't hold up.

I was going to suggest it might make more sense in Weeaboo Fighter/Tekken notation, but I typed it out and it just looked silly: 1236985+P

Just let go of the stick quickly to return to neutral when doing TK moves...thats how I do it

KoF XIII is pretty lenient when it comes to storing commands....

Ero_Oyaji, short version for max reps (5 from EX Raijinken and whatever from throw ....7?)

Do this: 12369nP

Don't do this: 12369+P

Go to neutral before pressing punch. Don't hold up forward and press punch.

Coolz, best to finish the motion with U/F not U, since you will at least get a normal jump TK and keep the reps going.

Also the Tekken notation would look something like this: 12368nP.

Moves like Jin and Kazuya's Dps need the neutral to work so specific notation is needed. Sorry to nit pick but this stuff is a bit complicated so I'm trying to hold it together for yall the best way I can :>

I like what KoF XIII has done in terms of accessibility. Create things like the 'hold button' trick but still have timing dependent combos that rely on precise inputs to push your combos further.

Thats from a KoF newbies point of view. Though even from my point of view it still does seem a little silly lol

Whats this hold button trick? Is it where u perform the command for a move then hold the button for it down to prolong it starting up?
If so, its been pretty helpful for me, but im super n00b and dont do fancy things like u guys so will prolly stuff me up if I got fancy?

Fun little Derpalicious trick I figured out with Billy the other day.

So in KOF you can whiff cancel.

And in just about any game, the instinct when the other guy does long horizontal slow ass poke is to jump over it (e.g. Rufus c.HP, anyone with a Divekick in anything.)

Billy's stand CD is a long ass horizontal slow poke that I noticed people like to try jump over.

You can whiff cancel it into his EX DP to catch jumps. It's ridiculous/completely amazing.

You could probably apply this to just about any character but the fact Billy's stand CD has like half-screen range and his EX DP is one of the lowest-risk, highest reward DPs in the game makes it really particularly lame on Billy.

Fuck Billy.

ATM I only do it with Super wakeups n such, im guessing it can be done with pretty much any command move?
Seems to be handy for doing air moves from the ground. Thats how I accidentally found it, if were talking bout the same thing.

IE: With Robert, from the ground -  :qcb: [:ub: + :k:]=HOLD

Is this trick viable for frame traps? Watching matches I see that when peeps have their opponent locked down in the corner they start poking a bit, can u step back a lil and throw out a heavy while buffering a move with the hold trick? Or would u need godlike reaction to pull this off or not pull it off safely?

IE: With Robert, from the ground, with your opponent trapped in corner - throw out a st.HK, while thats animating buffer up his Neo Max so u can do it OTG with the hold button trick... but if your opponent doesnt do anything, can the move(NM in this case) be cancelled. Hmm, im always so behind on 'new' tech.  :-\

Also can this also be a hold joystick trick too? .... goes chucks on KOF for some experimentin'

[EDIT] Seems ive been unknowingly using this feature for awhile now. :-\  I was using it for a drive cancel also. Now I know what it is, ive implemented it in one of my combos and its really helped me out at a certain tricky timing part!!
Looks like its all in the button holding, seems like keeping the joystick in a certain position has no effect...

This neat lil feaure gonna make for some wild stuff in the future I reckon!
Hopefully makes the character trials easier too!

You could react I'm sure, if it works. Set dummy to random block, in the corner and give try it.

Though holding the buttons in this instance might not be needed. Just pure reactions, especially since you're burning a lot of bar. To answer your question I think it could work. Best to test your reactions though.

Actually if you whiffed Rob's s.HK and held down the buttons and didn't let go in time you would get neomax....whoops! Best to press or not press imo.

You could stick out a blowback. If you get a counter hit from them pressing buttons then by all means. Watched Ralf anti-air someone mid screen with a blowback and went for his tackle super after he saw the counter hit come up. The blowback itself may not have been a reacted anti-air but the tackle after sure was.

I don't think I've answered what you're asking...or I might have confused things. Let me know...or someone else could chime in :>

IMPORTANT - holding a direction does matter. DP moves and some other moves will be overriden by a special that relies on a QCF motion to come out. For example, with fireball Kyo, if you input f,d,df,f,uf+P as fast as you can you will never get a DP because you've ended the motion with uf NOT f. This is really important for block strings when you want to end in a fireball and NOT a dp  :-[ . SF4 doesn't have this mechanic, which is really annoying since you have to slow down your walk forward fireball game but thats the sacrifice they made for lenient inputs! good for turtlers though -.-

If you find yourself mysteriously getting the wrong move then this could be a cause. I know other players with great execution, getting the wrong move and not knowing why. Just wanted to get that point across incase before it bites.

Or just choose Billy and use Fraud A all day every day. Like me.

Fuck Billy.

That's a really cool trick actually. I remember reading over at DC that you can cancel his b+lp, but only into his mash special which seemed kind of pointless, but cancelling his CD into an EX DP is cool, especially considering so many of my noob combos can start from that.
Title: Re: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: ATB|CoolzHAMYOLO on November 12, 2012, 03:33:47 PM
I think the main use of that is so you can do combos you'd otherwise not be able to do. Like you're able to cancel some normals into b+LP which only cancels into Mash.

But Mash is then empty cancelable (before it comes out) into hcf+P (the horizontal stick... I may have my inputs mixed up, I don't play Billy). The same thing applies to Clark from what I've been told. Like in all the combos where it looks like he's doing Gatling Attack DC Gatling Attack, it's actually Gatling Attack DC Vulcan Punch (Empty Cancel) Gatling Attack.

Just watched that video on Button Hold Trick. Wow. I'll have to try figure out some way to implement that. Could you theoretically use it from blockstun?

Say Clark is doing j.CD, s.CD, f+BD into mixup on you, and you blocked that series of moves, could you buffer a command grab (like Goro's hcb,f Hold P?) and then have it come out the second you get out of blockstun?

Cheers AlexK, yeah what I was thinking was more along the lines of instinct/fraud tactics, but im liking the blowback/CD idea, that could definitely be a handy trick I think, more lab work on that for me!!
Just about to start working on the u/f trick you mentioned too, ive hit EX Kyo's trials where I have to go from dragon punch motion > fireball motion and back again, thats pretty much a prerequisite for that combo I take it.

Would be awesome if you could use it with blockstun in the way your describing ATB|CoolzHAMYOLO, I have a bad feeling that cos its a command grab tho it may whiff?

Man I gotta find some more time to get into these KOF videos that fkuspencer is posting(thanks BTW), some valuable tech here!!

Post by: ATB|CoolzHAMYOLO on November 12, 2012, 07:06:51 PM
I thought the grab invulnerable period was only for the defender coming out of blockstun. If you aren't on blockstun and are on the offensive, if you tried a frametrap surely you could SPD them out of it like you can in AE. I'm just assuming since if it works for things like reversal DP, surely it could also work for reversal command grab... If I can figure out how to get Recording/Playback in KOF training mode I'll play around with it.

I managed to figure it out. Buffer window isn't like Forever, but it does give it a bit of leniency. Like if I get hit in the face with a j.CD and do DP+[P] right away, it won't like store until I stand up forever later and activate. It's pretty handy stuff to know though.

Pick Karate. You can't go wrong. Daimon's a badass but that'd mean you'd be playing Team Steroid Grapplerz and you'd probably have a bad matchup/bad day if someone opted to pick a zone-heavy team against it.

I'm so much more well rounded with him than I am with Vice.

Oh and that Clark HD combo fail. That was abysmal on my part =_= I was so excited because I knew it should've ended it, or close to, so I started tring to cancel my DM before I even input the running tackle part of the EX grab. Sigh, oh well. :P

Looks like the new year will be starting out with a bang for the KOF tournament scene in Japan, or at least what's left of it. Here's a lowdown from Dune of KCE (https://twitter.com/Dune_KOF/status/287258951349829634).

SNKPlaymore and Famitsu's Enterbrain are officially cooperating with one of the first KOF13 tournaments of this year to be held in Japan. This Special Tournament will be held on Jan 14 at a venue in Nishinippori Versus. The registration details & page will be opened in 1-2 days so we'll probably get more details soon.

Rules for the tournament will be the same as another big KOF tournament, 'KCE Cup 5', which will be held on the previous day. Two teams from that tournament will be given seeding at this Special Tournament. (Rules: 2-on-2 team match, same characters can't be used, Alt characters are considered separate.)

This Special Tournament is said to feature some 'new ideas' to make it additionally entertaining. As usual it'll be streamed live on Nico. According to Dune, this Special Tournament will be "a step into a new direction of things". (By that, I assume SNKP is becoming more friendly towards the competitive scene that they seemed to care pretty much crap about.)

Coincedently, EVO champion MadKOF and his teammates are slated to hit Japan around the same date, so things should be pretty interesting.

Nay! Backward ass nico streaming! DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD:

So when activating HD mode in a combo, you either get a forward dash or a standing C attack. Any tips for getting the C out so that I can continue the combo better? Can I activate HD and then hit C immediately as a kind of safety net, or will it not combo unless it's the the built-in attack?
Title: Re: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: Alexk on January 29, 2013, 11:15:10 AM
The stand C comes out after you've activated because you haven't activated HD fast enough. Gotta be super fast. Thats why confirming into HD out of lights is such a bitch though it sort of goes in as muscle memory.

You  can confirm off the stand C if you plan on it coming out. Like with Shen if you in qcb+A after you do a late activation, the automatic stand C will be cancelled into his overhead.
Title: Re: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: MadeManG74 on January 29, 2013, 03:49:52 PM
So is there a general rule in that it's better to get the dash rather than the Standing C? Basically I'm trying to do a Vice HD combo so it would start with an overhead (f+A) or close D and then into her throw super.

I'll play around a bit in training mode and see which works best, but I was at a loss as to what the rules are concerning what actually comes out. So I take it that if you do the HD earlier to cancel an attack you get the dash instead of the C?

Title: Re: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: fkuspencer on January 29, 2013, 03:50:50 PM
The main difference is how you time your BC/HD actiation after your hitconfirm.

You will get a forward dash if you HD activate early during the active frames of a normal. However, you will get an automatic st.C if you delay your HD activate and hit it so that you BC during the the recovery frames of a normal. I suggest to play around with your BC timing with different normals that you are able to get hits off such as st.C, any cancelled command normal (that is comboed into), crouching lights or standing lights to observe how much time you are able delay to get your automatically st.C. Best to also check your distance as well.

In the case of hitting your BC timing too early when you intend to get the auto-st.C but instead get the forward dash, you can hit C right away and you would still be able to combo. You can also combo like in 2k2UM with MAX MODE where you can BC from normal, dash, C.

So when activating HD mode in a combo, you either get a forward dash or a standing C attack. Any tips for getting the C out so that I can continue the combo better? Can I activate HD and then hit C immediately as a kind of safety net, or will it not combo unless it's the the built-in attack?

So in summary,
- Normal attack, wait a tick, BC to get your st.C out always
- Yes, you can activate HD and then hit C immediately as a safety net.

I hope this helps and about time you get some HD comboes in, ye slowpoke.

Was just about to post the Mai one.

Seems like it might be a good trick for getting out of corners> c.C xx Musasabi, since she doesn't have any cheap wake-up options.

Her c.C is a sneaky move. Not the best against jumping opponents but still. Maybe the block stun from her c.C might give her enough time to fly out of there.

So yesterday I had a massive training session that went for longer than I anticipated and it kind of fucked my mind something severe. One thing that came out of it though was that I really have no clue how to maximise damage output with Maxima, especially with meter. Billy on the other hand, I find I can do some good damage off of lights pretty consistently with a few bars and drive.

So here's what I'm thinking, maybe I should move Billy to #2, keep Vice in #3, but then what do I do with Maxima? He's not really suited to battery position. I'm considering putting him on the bench and maybe picking up someone else who's good without meter. Preferably zoning based or at least somewhat low execution.

I'm thinking I might go back to my old week one character of King, as I can use her to zone and know a little about her already. I was also thinking Terry, just because I kinda always wanted to use him.

Any suggestions from those who actually know what they are doing in this game?

I'm arse at KoF so take this with a grain of salt, but I think Terry is best suited in 2nd. You need drive and meter for his bnb, plus EX fireball is a pretty good pressure tool. Terry without meter is not much of a threat, both in terms of damage and mix-ups. I've seen a few Japanese players put him on point, though.

At the moment I'm rocking Athena/Terry/Clark. Athena is just there until I learn another character, I don't like her that much in XIII. Clark is anchor because his HD combos are really easy and if you have a few bars you can get good damage of an EX command grab. When I learn another character I'll probably switch him to point, though.

Your opinion of Terry is the same as mine. He can be first as long as you can pester with him well with st.B and lock down with him well.  In the 2nd last Game-Versus, there was a lot of Terry action with 3 players using Yukichi's team (Ryo/Terry/Kyo), including Yukichi himself (those other players were Ensoku/Picnic and KouKou). Ensoku went to work with this team and left a good trial of bodies. ;D

The said Game-Versus footage is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=0KyHK6f6MRI#t=771s).

Hmm, you could try Kensou, Saiki or King if you want a fireball character up first. Otherwise, you probably can't go wrong with DLC characters and Kim if you want to go that path. Ryo, Kyo, Billy and Mature are good point characters too. I hope these handful of suggestions can help you decide who to use.  ;D ;D
Title: Re: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: MadeManG74 on April 02, 2013, 09:11:50 AM
I'm very happy with my new team of Ex Iori, Billy and Vice. I think that putting Billy into second place has really opened him up a lot more, having that extra meter to work with really gives him some solid options and combos.

Changing to Ex Iori from Maxima also helps out considerably, while Maxima was a character I enjoyed, I realised when I put some actual time and effort into learning some combos that I was really squandering him since I found myself unable to really hit those big damage combos consistently. Ex Iori on the other hand I find that I can use really well on point with minimal meter, just using his basic tools and some simple combos into Rekkas will build good meter and do good damage without even needing to use drive.

Then Vice of course in the back, she's capable of so much damage with combos that even a ham-fisted scrub like me can do, and do them from a jCD no less! I can even do an ultra ghetto HD combo for 750 damage, although I need to work on picking my spots for it in a match. I can do it off of either an overhead or a cl D. Also having that meter for Ex Tackles works wonders against opponents who get overly aggressive. I still have some problems when I'm stuck in the corner and I'm getting safe jumped though. I think GCCD or GC Roll might need to be used more often for me.
Title: Re: KOF XIII Discussion and Media Thread
Post by: Cabjoy on April 02, 2013, 11:45:52 AM
I understand why you guys are saying Terry is good 2nd, but tbh he's better first from my experience. He's good at keeping people out with a mixture of fb's, hcb K move, st.C and df.C.
His DC combo's don't actually add that much damage, and neither do a bunch of his SDMs, so the meter you could spend with Terry is better spent on a character more suitable as second (cough Beni cough).
His EX Fb is ok, but the setups are all very typical and against good players you need to be careful. If you try to go in for the guard break, they can blowback if the have meter. Some people also roll but from memory you can bait that, then throw them.

This is a video of an anti-roll strat using Clark. The description for it is in the youtube vid.

I've developed a counter strategy to this one, which isn't full proof since I need someone to mix between two options - his cB, sB and BSAB. However, I feel there is a good chance that my strategy will still work.

Since Clark can mix you up on the ground with BSAB and lows its hard to determine when to jump against him or get him away without spending meter - this is in the corner by the way. Not to mention he can option select air throw you - scary!! So what I've done is set Clark to what is happening in the link as well as setting him to BSAB after the air throw knockdown.

After Clark air throws and dashes forward I motion d/b to u/b. When Clark's cB connects you will crouch block it and by the time his sB hits you will be blocking by up-backing. For the BSAB scenario you will jump back away and can then punish.

This strategy will lose to his option select air throw/jump C, but it still counters his low/grab game.

You'll have to practise this in training mode to get it down since if you screw up, you might jump back to early and he will catch you with his cB - too late and he can grab you with BSAB.

Apparently BSAB is reactable on wake-up. When I'm knocked down by Clark my mind is racing at a mile a minute so keeping calm and reacting to one out of his many options just doesn't work out for me so screw that.

So,

I've been recording my matches lately.

Turns out the replays are bugged/glitched. The most humerous one (???) was during Colin vs I. I remember that I HD'd Colin in this match but somehow the game/replay decided that I started my HD off something else. I then dropped the HD. After this happened, Colin started spamming cB, FURIOUSLY, as well as GC rolling any chance he got. After this chaos was over we both stood there and did nothing for the next 32 seconds. This happened in the other two matches I watched before it. To say the obvious, the game was not recording what actually happened.

LOL and lol.

It was gettin pretty hard watching the replays because of this stupidity so I stopped. You can sort of tell when it stops and starts though, so I should soldier on to get the most out of the replay.

After the bugged round occured, the next match would resume as normal. I didn't check if the meter spent before that round changed the next round. Suppose I should ~

I've notified SNK_Prog_Jace on steam. Is there anyone else I should notify? Has anyone else noticed this?

Here it is in action - typical Colin gameplay. Mashin' cB, GC rolling any chance he gets, activating HD for no reason what so ever. Upon noticing his blatent HD activation, I reacted swiftly with my own HD combo.

All jokes aside, I can't quite tell when the replay went funky. It seems like the whole game is sort of off, even before the HD combo. But if memory serves me right, I think I landed that HD combo, hence the reason why I was doing reverse DPBs and DPCs after the HD was dropped.

I don't see anything wrong? Looks like pretty standard Colin play to me.

Hi guys - I'm new here and I am wondering how many of you play KOFXIII on PC? Atm, I play on a PS3 controller but I'm trying to save up for/find a decent stick, but I'm looking for people to play against.

Edit: As I send this reply I see a steam edition thread, my apologies ^^
