Get a friend at your level of enthusiasm and learn the game with them. Friends make things better.  :)

Yes. I couldn't agree more. In fact, any willing training partner will do. Many of the fundamentals are learnt through training mode and there are certain things that can't be achieved with the training dummy alone.

I've been in your shoes for far too long. Longer than I can ever remember. I started playing fighting games since Street Fighter II but I never got to all that important stuff (will mention later) until quite recently. Back in the day, I use to be the type that thinks special moves were the coolest things. I foolishly came to the conclusion that special moves and all that flashy looking stuff is everything you need to know about street fighter, even if it meant mashing it out without knowing how it works or how it was done (I'm certain that alot of people who were inspire by street fighter for the first time have the same train of thought that everything that happens on the screen happens for no special reason other than pure entertainment). That was until I started going to arcades during my late high school years and witness how players there consistently execute these same special moves at will and body me without even using any at all (all they needed was one button). My initial hypothesis of special moves and fighting games in general went straight out the window at that point.

After some time, I somehow managed to learn the proper motions of the special moves and do it at will. However I still kept getting run over not only by real players but the CPU as well. The discovery there was that special moves have recovery (you can't just keep throwing fireballs and expect your opponent to not jumping over them). I saw how other players were throwing fireball at long distances and resorted to normals at short distances. That was during the Street Fighter Alpha 3 era and it was all I had to work with until street fighter IV.

The first thing I learnt in Street Fighter IV was cancelling into special moves (I never knew about crouching medium kick into fireball was low MK, then a punch button upon reaching the quarter circle forward). I never asked anyone about this sort of thing (cos I'm a shy person) so what I used to do is go to City Hunter (which happened to have SF4 installed on their PC's) and practice the training mode to try the different things that I see more experienced players do. That eventually paid off because I also leant how to FADC (focus dash cancel) into ultra around that time. Replicating what I learnt on an arcade stick was a big issue until I stumbled upon Daigo Umehara's video on how he holds an arcade stick and it really worked for me.

The next step for me was learning how to use normal moves (light punch, medium punch etc.). Maining Guile in Vanilla SF4 really helped in that regard because it gave me alot of opportunities to practice/apply proper distancing. I started winning alot of matches against other players from that point onwards. Learning/performing combos was not as difficult as I thought it'd be since I downloaded the game on PC. I would grind it out in training mode, break it down into smaller portions, practice each portion individually and combine it when I feel confident.

Through all that practice, I actually missed one of the most crucial things in street fighter, 'how to DP'. I mean, I do know how to do a dragon punch, but I either don't think about doing it or I just can't do it in a crouching position when the opponent jumps in. I discovered that one of the reasons for this was my infatuation and reliance on the focus attack mechanic. I used to practice focus attacks all day long that I became programmed to use it against everything (prior to attending YSB I get away with it every time). Another reason for me to be bad at DP's was that I didn't know that there was more than one way to do it (eg. in a crouching position). I could find myself holding my stick down while my opponent jump-in and don't know how to cleanly execute a DP in that position. Someone eventually told me how to do this (shout-outs to Ikuya) and now I can even do auto-correct DP's. So the lesson is, 'please learn how to DP'.

Like BBmachine says, I don't think there is a 'fast' way to improve your street fighter skills. I'm an example of one of the slowest learners one can ever imagine. I stumbled so many times and I still have miles to go. But that may be because I spend a lot of time practicing by myself under a rock. Now that you've discovered the goodness of YSB, things may turn out better for you.

We'll Rob hasn't been coming because they don't have ultra. Aerick and Johnny comes usually during work lunch breaks (1-2-ish). Somerandom came like 2-3 weeks ago on a Thursday I think. That srubby Vega player comes from time to time. Genxa was there this Thursday too but he was playing Tekken. David has been coming in the past few weeks, I haven't seen him this week though.

Yeh. I played him tonight too. I absolutely agree; playing him really tests your fundamentals. He managed to beat Rob's Viper 5 times in a row before Rob left. Then I managed to beat him with my Guy twice in a row and then he switched to his pocket Ryu and Bison.

I really don't like Dan's stand close hard kick input change to back hard kick. Although, I can now use it as a descent anti-air, it does seem awkward when using it in a combo where I need to link it to crouching medium punch cancel into fireball or dp.

Sedar didn't have his watch this Wednesday. He's still asking for the time.

Play who you like but make sure you're always refining your play and taking out bad habits. Competent players will adjust very quickly to people who don't have a legitimate game. Learn how the character is intended to be played and then fill in the gaps with creativity/tech and/or exceptional reads as you become a better overall player. Fundamentals come from playing, but if you're too busy running '50/50' plays and mixups then your growth as a player will be slower and you'll probably be at a loss to why you're struggling.

That I'll have to agree. I only realized how important making reads were 2 months ago when I was analysing my past match videos with Xian. Before that, I thought it was all about being lucky guessing specific movements and jump-in's but those were actually suppose to be predictions based on observation. I basically had to rethink the way I play focusing more on the ground game by making use of all my normals depending on the situation and expecting jump-ins at the same time to reduce the number of back dashes I do. Even now, I'm still not proficient at teching throws, which is why there are still quite a few back dashes. 3 button tech is still quite hard for me to pull off (I kept doing it too early) and I presume 4 button tech will be gone when ultra comes out.

I assume Trevor's up to his old ways. It's best to imagine Trevor as a next level CPU opponent, i.e. Hardest + 1 with DP FADC and combos. Sometimes it may seem unfair, but you must understand that the CPU is unfair because it can read your inputs.

Once Ultra hits, he is going to have a hell of a time adjusting. I assume he's using Adon? It's hard to be patient against his high chip damage and auto pilot, but I would say, walk towards him and force him to do stuff whilst minimizing damage to yourself. Get a good handle on when he presses/jumps and see if you can counter poke it. Try to walk in and get strings in. It's important to have safe jumps and to bait him out as he isn't somebody who can handle pressure.

I'm fairly sure Adon is never on + when you block his ground Jaguars, so you can contest him then when he doesn't have meter. His air Jags are + for him, but you can focus those.

Probably not the easiest advice to follow when you eat 2 Jaguars/'s in a row but you gotta stay calm against him even when he gets a sizable life lead.

He's being using more Guile now. But I found that his Yun is more annoying than Adon.

I don't mean for it to come off as a complaint at all, just.. That damage...

No oneplayeyers  playing against a new character, that is how to learn. I do think you gave Guile up too quickly though which would have given you a lot of applicable skills.
That's the reason I stopped using Guile because I was getting owned a lot, I didn't mind dying because I've always got credits... but I was thinking may be skilled players don't want to sit there and play if your not worthy of giving them some kind of challenge so I just stuck to Akuma and Oni.

Imagine how I felt when I first started playing Dan. He's like rock bottom of the tier list ever since Hakan started each round with oil. I remember losing countless matches against many top players using Dan even when I knew I could do better with Guile (the character I started with in Vanilla). I think you'll get most out of the game if you play a character that you find fun to use. If you play a character just for the sake of entertaining someone else or just to win, then, it'll gradually become depressing (at least for me). It's kind of like being in a relationship; you want to be you and do what you want to do and if they can't except you for what you do then that's their problem.

Does anyone know that he's actually acquainted with the owner of that kebab place across the street? He either works there or is a relative of the owner. I reckon that's the reason why he comes to TZ so often.

@Camus0501: Damn, I should've stayed longer. I was playing until angry kid was bugging me so he could play cpu after I was done beating the shit out of Seth. Before that he thought he could lock horns with my guile with his god awful Fei Long (random dash forward flame kicks and persistent jump-ins for me to crouch HP). He went nuts and say it was bullshit when I punished his random ultra 1 with my ultra 1. LOL

I realized Anthony was standing behind me after several close matches against a decent Ryu player.

Anyways  Camus0501, hope to see you around next time. I main Dan and I can't wait to have another go at that Sakura match-up, especially after I got bodied by Uryo 1st to 5 at Shadowloo Showdown last year.


Speaking of angry kid, he came along right after Jonny decided to go home after I beat his Yang. He refused to challenge me, assuming that I wouldn't give him free rounds like Jonny would (he assumed correctly). To my surprise, while I was in the middle of waiting for CPU Hakan to slide from full screen, he asked me how to do Ryu's dp fadc into ultra 1. In my mind, I was like "dude, it'd take you till the end of time to be able to pull that off". I told him that it takes alot of practice, but he didn't believe me even when I continued to assure him it's not an easy task. He goes; "But Jonny can do it...". And I was like, "Dude, Jonny's even better than me at this game."   

I checked last night and found Dan's jab dp can whiff punish sweep very consistently. His best normal to whiff punish with appeared to be far standing medium kick. Crouching medium punch was ok but not as much range as the other two.

It takes Chun Li 19 frames to recover from a whiffed sweep. So ideally, my 10 frame start-up sweep would do the trick which gives me a guaranteed hard knockdown. The problem is that I have to confidently predict that the sweep will whiff.

By jove I got it, You need to uppercut more!

Yeh, I've been told many times about my backdashes and lack of uppercuts. I actually made contact with Xian in the past week and sent him one of my matches and he told me that my main problem was weak footsies, which was causing the backdashes and lack of uppercuts. Because I struggle with the neutral game the backdashes became a symptom in an effort to avoid the neutral game altogether, and as a result, it becomes difficult to take notice and react to jump-ins to uppercut. And even if I do try to look for jump-ins, there wouldn't be that many of them because there wasn't much need for the footsie dominant opponent to do so unless they get a knockdown. Instead, they'll be the ones looking for me to jump in, making me more predictable. So the key is, win or at least take control of the footsie game and the rest will eventually fix themselves.

I've never had the opportunity to play Ricky much, but even back when I faced Ben, Chun gave me a lot of grief, especially the sweep.

Also another issue is my dulled reactions. I've been getting hit by every single hazanshu, Oni slash, and Hawk sweep today >_<

The biggest strength against Guy that Chun has over Guy is her which kind of makes his shoulder drop use a little redundant, but like almost every matchup she has, when you can put offensive pressure on her, you will generally have her number.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but I think Guy's ex command air throw can actually beat out Chun's ex sbk on reversal. I don't know if this is set up specific, but I remember playing Melbourne's (and probably Australia's) premier Guy player, who used it quite effectively against me.

Also, focus is your best friend against Chun's sweep :)

In episode 5 of Xian's academy, he has shown that Chun Li's Primary pokes (c. HP, s. MP and sweep) all have the same range and that she has less reach with her sweep if you are standing up as opposed to crouching (which holds true for footsie game in general). I used this knowledge against Ikuya's Chun Li and there were a lot of whiffed sweeps. Now, I just need to learn how to whiff punish those.
