Looks like 'Drive' in video game form. Which is a great thing obviously!

Great find, I've wanted to see this for ages.

Shameless plug - while you're there, check this doco out - http://www.smh.com.au/tv/Documentary/Hoon-Capital-4262604.html

It's not quite video games (it's about hoon and car culture in Australia) but I worked on it, so it'd be great if a few people could click on it.

I think it's great that this thread exists; it's important to keep evaluating any scene. I'm light years away from being a top player, but I've been lucky enough to speak with plenty of great players, along with plenty of lower level players.

As a very interested outsider, I've read this thread closely, and I honestly think everyone is correct, to greater or lesser degrees.

Online IS a factor, because for many people it will be their first experience competing. Guess what happens if it's a shitty experience? That person will move on. You can say 'that person was never gonna become a top player' but who knows? Not every top player was instantly 100% committed to the game. Some would be stubborn and focussed, but many were nurtured and allowed to grow.

Our population also has to be a factor here - 20-ish million vs 200+ million? It's not purely about numbers, it's also infrastructure, support, hype and locations. It's great the Kuwait dudes did well at Shadowloo, but they are a very tight crew with a devoted space (that they go to every day).

I think the only real solution is to grow the scene, legitimise it (imagine if it was seen as 'cool' by high school kids?) and to ensure that the people who really want to level up have the tools. And by tools, I don't just mean youtube links and forums. Usain Bolt has probably always been a fast runner, but he's still benefitted from coaching and support.

I know lots of companies support the scene, but maybe they could do more to really increase the skill level? Bring out some pro's to do workshops or something? Throw some real cash at a league?

The only other thing I could suggest would be tiered competitions/weekly's. As in the big leagues and the minor leagues. Everyone gets more experience in a competition setting and there is another level for people to strive for.

The sad truth is the top guys have a lot on their shoulders. They're not just the top players they're also ambassadors and educators. With great power comes responsibilities, like it or not.

Community News / Quick Shadowloo Showdown 12 video...

Hey all, congrats on a great Shadowloo Showdown! It was great to see such a world class event up close and personal.

I'm sure there'll be plenty more coverage to come, but here's a quick video that will be shown on various ABC websites -

Well done to everyone involved.

It's kind of funny in some ways, 'cos I find the whole thing massively confusing. When I mention to people that I'm already confused they say "Don't stress, it won't make that much of a difference," which makes me wonder why bother in the first place then?

I really want to love this game, and I'm excited to start on a level playing field... but I suspect it will do my head in. Is there a 'stop gem confusion' gem? Or is that DLC?

Haven't you ever talked to someone who uses your character and had different ideas on how you would improve them? Maybe you think Cammy should have more life, maybe your friend who uses Cammy wants more dmg, now gems let you do what you want to suit your play style.

With the right gems you make a 50% combo you get hit by into a 30% one, you can make your 500 dmg pandora combo into one over 700. Gems will make a difference, they just aren't game changers like Ultras and X-Factor. Top players like Ricky Ortiz and Flash Metriod seemed to like the gem options and really like the game itself... and this was on FGTV not Cross Assault, if they thought the game was wack they would say so on FGTV.

I hear you, it makes sense to be able to dial in a character, I just find it all a touch confusing at this stage. Once we all get our hands on it I'm sure it'll be clearer. Either that or we'll all just copy what the pros are doing.

UNABLE TO READ FROM ATTACHED DEVICE.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Imagine how many issues there'll be plugging and unplugging any kind of storage device.

I really want to love this game, and I've been pretty hyped about it since I heard of it, but all the gems and DLC business is kind of doing my head in. I'm just struggling to even understand the sheer volume of options involved with simply playing the game. I know it's not out yet, so I'm reserving my judgement, but when I start hearing about dozens of different gems it just turns me off. Will I need a diploma in gems just to have a balanced match?

Street Fighter IV - General Discussion / Re: Unmotivated

It's interesting that since the FGC has gotten pretty big, there seems to be a focus on not just playing, or getting better, but being a total beast. I fall into it too sometimes.

If you're not enjoying it, give it a miss - life is too important to take seriously.

Good games yesterday red_sense, I enjoyed getting bodied by your various characters!

I've been playing sf4 a bit lately, but I miss third strike. Might have to get back into it, but there doesn't seem to be too many people still playing. It kind of blows my mind just how in-depth it is compared to sf4.

So what's the best time to actually get some decent games going?

I'm just gonna buy another Qanba - being able to use them on multiple consoles is just too handy. I tipped a few mates off to it though, I think they pulled the trigger.

PSN - kwalitycorey

I've just started to play so I'm a scrub but I want to learn properly. Currently a Ryu cliche but I'm branching out. I'd love to have some quality time online so feel free to add me for easy wins!

What sort of skill level should someone be at before attempting to compete? I'd love to come along but I'm not sure it'd be worth it competing. I suppose even the guru's need someone to body to move through the brackets.

Either way, well done on the promo videos, they look great.

Like ToM said, it's not just for the hardcore, there will be plenty of casual set ups and other activities for people to do. Also we're making it as good as possible for those who just want to spectate so they feel like there are at a top level event. Hope you can come down KC, I have no doubt you will enjoy yourself plus meet some cool new people.  :D

And thanks for the compliments.

Nice one. I'll be there with bells on, I'm even thinking of perhaps doing a story on it, so that once I get slaughtered I can still be productive. Either way I'm looking forward to it.
