The highest earner in the history of chess, Kasparov, never got more than 500,000 USD from a tournament or an exhibition. And he was pretty fucking exceptionally high paid.
Maybe the top 10 chess players earn quite a bit.
But for the most part chess players are starving.
Remember the number of chess players in Moscow alone is at least 100 times more than the number of SF players the world over.
Chess doesn't pay. Best you can do, unless you're a fucking robot genius alien cyborg like Carlsen (of which there is only ever 1 in the world at any point in time), you're gonna make most of your money teaching scrubs how to play and you're not gonna make much.

would have got a bonus 500k on top of that if he won
anand took home about 2.5m from the world championship this year
just as in sf, its just the absolute upper echelon that gets paid.
