Was really hoping for more of the 'original' cast!

Ryu, Ken, Guile, Sagat, Balrog, Vega, Bison, Zangief, Chun Li, Blanka, Honda and Akuma at the very least would be awesome.

I always thought/hoped those characters would make the cut, but with Karin's revealing today... :(

Fingers crossed, SFV looks better after every revision!

Speculation is that two more classic characters from SF2 are yet to be revealed. I'm personally hoping for Sim and Gief, with Akuma being a day one DLC option. I think withholding Akuma for day one DLC would actually be a smart marketing and cash spinning move, as much as I loathe the idea. It would also give them a platform to stress test their DLC model on release with an item they know will sell well.

Interesting that a Capcom dude at the TGS presentation desk today is dressed as Honda though. Of course, this might mean absolutely nothing.

Community News / Re: OzHadou.net and forum updates

16th September, 2015:

- Buff: Added HTML5 player support to LS (forum + front page). In the forum header or on the front page, next to live Twitch channel station links you will now see a '[5]' link. Click this instead to view the channel in an HTML5 rendered tab rather than Twitch's (for now) default Flash player. Does NOT work under Firefox. Chrome only.

The catch is that chat isn't available (Twitch has not made it available yet via this method) though the benefits of the HTML5 player are kinda nice.

Street Fighter IV - General Discussion / Re: EVO 2015 predictions

Ai Ai has been running a train. We've seen a lot of lacking matchup experience against Juri being demonstrated which combined with his obvious skill has seen him kick serious ass. Ultra David noted on stream yesterday that Daigo was not looking forward to facing him which was telling of his reputation in Japan for sure.

Right now I think he's probably looking favourable though I'm certainly not counting Tokido or Momochi out. Top eight is going to be nuts.

Do we have any details on who from Australia and NZ is attending?

From memory last year we had both Somniac and Shang, so I'm curious if they and others have made the pilgrimage again. I had a cursory look through the brackets last week and couldn't find anybody I recognised, though its possible I spelled names incorrectly or different handles had been registered.

Personally I'm curious to see how RB goes. I don't have him pegged to take it, but I expect he's going to be a new wrecking ball regardless. It will be interesting to see if EVO is as rife with upsets this year as it was last - I remember being pretty shocked at both Infiltration and Daigo being sent packing so soon into pools.

It will be interesting to see how Infiltration goes. He tends to have an almost casual-like approach in majors sometimes, suggesting he might be holding back some character preference(s) for EVO. Some stubborn character choices (particularly after losing the first match) hasn't exactly been uncommon for him which has impacted his tournament consistency lately in my opinion.

Tokido, Daigo, Mago, Bonchan, Xian, Momochi, PR Rog (of late), Smug, RB, Poongko and Infiltration have all been pretty menacing lately which I think will make anything after top 32 potentially very blurry. Then you have guys like Sako, Fuudo, Hart, Itabashi, Snake Eyes, Teddy, Nemo, Kazunoko, Pepeday, GamerBee, Dieminion, Luffy and more being in the mix who aren't exactly incapable of making a mess of things in the upper echelons of the brackets either.

Then you have your usual vault of bracket gate keepers who in many ways can block favoured player progress. Guys like Valle, Wong, Imstillthedaddy, Choi and Filipino Champ come to mind and also any capable players driving mix-up heavy characters who can quickly make a favoured player sweat once the pressure piles on.

I expect the top 32/16 to be a cast of players somewhat familiar and expected but who knows what upsets we're going to see. There's so many talented players arguably at the height of their game right now and with SFIV possibly nearing its EVO swansong you can expect they're all going to throw down as hard as possible.

Personally I don't like that you can't lurk on Facebook.

Yep. Pages by default are publicly visible, groups require joining (or in more restrictive cases, an invite) to view.

Short of creating your own browser tracking-cookie basket/account for Zuckerberg and his advertising + data mining partners to benefit exclusively from account, you're locked out.

Also, cheers for the list, Lord Mutton!

What was once the bulk of traffic on these forums in 2008 (and prior) through until 2013 has indeed shuffled off to Facebook and Tapatalk. A segment also gets funnelled into Reddit. As you're aware a handful of us are pretty active on SRK. You and I for example feed screeds of stuff into that site daily.

I built a cross-posting feature (i.e. single account required) between SMF and Wordpress to facilitate article linking and comment posting as a means to help the front-page pull in some attention over the (at the time) high traffic the forums generated. I think my timing sucked there, as it is rarely used. The same somewhat applies to the little stream index above too (though you can't so much comment against it - its just a dynamic list, that populates whenever the collection of streams it keeps tabs on go live).

The event registration/interest calendar bolt-on for event announcement posts also worked well when myself and Goswu were running YSB, and from what I can tell it still does today albeit with a reduction in discussion. It is now more of a 'yep, I'm coming' thing, and that's about the size of it.

Participation on forums his historically been the life-blood of ozhadou.net, especially in the past. It has also typically come in waves, with the release of news games being the catalyst to bring in both new users and discussion. The release of Sirlin's HD Remix for ST pulled in a lot of users around 2007/8 (and with them a lot of discussion) and later the release of SFIV for arcade and then consoles. This held sway with the releases of Super SFIV and 2012, KOF, Marvel and to perhaps SFxT. Things began to wane (i.e. shifted to social media) perhaps 6 months before Ultra dropped which brings us to where we are today.

These aspects aside, the forums (and to an extent front-page) sees predictable surges when major events crop up (OHN, Shadowloo, BAM, et al) but in recent years these have also petered off with discussion again being largely attached to social media.

I personally don't use social media, though acknowledge that the vast amount of people do and have considered reworking ozhadou.net (front-page and forums) to better integrate with FaceBook in particular so far as cross-posting and single sign-on is concerned. This means that irrespective of where people 'post', both the FaceBook and ozhadou.net resources would be populated with banter.

Perhaps the main reason I haven't done this is because I have a reluctance to attach personally identifiable aspects to posts - for example, Joe User's FaceBook account/username being linked to posts and comments here. However, the trend I see is that people don't seem to care about this so perhaps it is worth revisiting. Feedback on this is definitely welcomed as I certainly don't want to be forcing user's hands when it comes to that kind of thing.

One thing I am interested in is where people from Australia's FGC are active on FaceBook - if there are go-to FaceBook groups or pages that people gravitate towards, I can look at some methods to cross-pollinate things if they are indeed active. This would work two fold where both resources would generate attention while keeping what is shared/posted in sync.

More information about who won the tourney's, breakdown the brackets , a big match video section, I think a lot of people like watching, make this place THE hub of fighting games in Australia.

I'll see what I can do in terms of dynamically pulling in Challonge bracket output. This would mean less manual data entry - if the results are recorded (say for example, OHN, YSB, TTT, etc) I might be able to pull them into a go-to location that populates as results come in. I am unsure if Challonge has an external API, but I can certainly take a look.

We had a video section in the past but it sorta fell by the way side. We can always fire it up again.

Tips section? Where people can share technology.

A single forum dedicated to this where users tag threads accordingly posts (e.g. [SFIV] - Beating Crouch Tech) might be useful. Once somebody kicks something like this off, it tends to attract attention as each person adds in their methods and so on. Again, this is the kind of thing that tends to gain traction when a new game drops (i.e. SF5) but might benefit from the cross-pollination thing from FaceBook mentioned above too.

Maybe a shake up on the visual style.

I'm a text person personally, though I do admit things could use a fresh coat of paint. Goswu has been our main man so far as the visual style is concerned so perhaps we can look at giving the place an updated look. The separation of the front-page (Wordpress) and the forums (SMF) can make this tricky in terms of establishing consistency, and the forums may see a change again if social media integration with SMF isn't as clean as I'd like (I prefer to minimise hack and slash methods where possible, as it can break update functionality with the underpinning applications).

Do you guy's need help doing this stuff?

Always welcome. Perhaps the most welcomed commitment would be for content contributors. When content is created (interviews, articles, featured video submission, etc) it tends to invoke discussion which keeps the wheels turning. If people are interested in contributing in this area by all means sing out.

---

Above all I think social media integration is key. Forums as a whole are somewhat dying all over (not just ozhadou.net), with those surviving either being quite large (SRK for example) or bolstered with social media integration as a content life-line. This is probably the immediate area to look at and we'd welcome any suggestions people have - particularly in the form of existing examples. One thing I have considered is bolting on Disquss support, which wrangles FaceBook, Twitter, OpenID (and so on authentication) post submission though this is again a separate component from the (existing) forum.

Hit me with some FaceBook groups so I can look into some options - I think that might be a good starting point.

Quick question: What is/are the address(es) for arcades (with SFIV) in Melbourne?

Street Fighter IV - General Discussion / Re: Reducing input lag (PC)
« on: June 10, 2015, 12:18:05 AM »
To clarify, can this only have more or equal input lag than full screen with vsync off?  Or could it be less still?

I expect it will be the equivalent of playing full screen with vsync off, yes. It certainly feels the same (albeit without the annoying tearing).

Street Fighter IV - General Discussion / Reducing input lag (PC)
« on: June 09, 2015, 11:21:17 AM »
Those of you who know me perhaps know I'm the world's pickiest bitch when it comes to lag, both the online latency variety and also local input lag typically associated with screen post-processing and vsync. The latter especially.

I've found another method to reduce local input lag a little further in the game (SFIV on PC) while still enjoying the smoothness associated with vsync using the Borderless Gaming tool.

https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming

This application allows you to capture any* windowed application and force it to a maximised window sans edge borders. This allows any game to forego its own vsync implementation and instead fall back to Windows' own vsync (which is also triple buffered) that has extremely low input lag compared to 90% of full screened applications utilising DirectX or OpenGL.

So with SFIV, I run the game, specify 1080p as my game resolution, DISABLE vsync and accept the settings. Next, I hit ALT+Enter to force the game to a window. Then, I run Borderless Gaming, run the application scan, select SSFIVAE (the detected executable) and force it into the 'favourites' column. Then click the third icon down from the centre to force the game into a borderless window occupying the full screen.

This results in what passes for a full screened render, albeit with a much snappier vsync implementation and a reduction in input lag (for those who typically run the game with vsync enabled in the first place). Because you are now essentially running the game WITH vsync (borrowed from Windows' own desktop renderer) you have a smoother looking game free (mostly) of the accepted tearing and with massively reduced, if not non-existent input lag.

Another bonus is that because the game is now ostensibly a Windowed desktop application, switching to other applications (say for example if you use dual screens) means the systems doesn't need to switch from true full screen back to the desktop, which prevents the delay associated with doing this. This means you can muck around with other applications while waiting in lobbies and so on without undergoing the annoying fullscreen/window switching delay.

Worth noting is that after you do this once, provided Borderless Gaming is running, it will remember the settings every time you run SFIV.

I strongly recommended against enabling vsync in-game once this is in effect (nor is it required anyway). There seems to be a weird bug with SFIV that sees Oni and Evil Ryu's aura effects invoke a really weird stuttering issue that breaks this 'fix'.

* Some games don't agree with Borderless Gaming. For example, Quake Live absolutely refuses to play ball and I had a shit of a time getting GZDoom to bite consistently. SFIV works nicely though. Ideally I'd like to get my hands on a UE4 driven game to see if this is something perhaps useful for when SF5 drops also.

Give this a shot and see what you guys think. One thing to keep in mind that every millisecond shaved off local input lag transfers to a bump in responsiveness for online play also. While it naturally doesn't reduce online connection lag whatsoever, the small boost in response you receive for your local inputs naturally eats into the total frame delay (offline input latency + incurred online play lag) making for a better experience overall.

At least, this has been the experience for myself.

For those curious, I run all these tests and so on using a desktop machine running Windows 7 driven by an nVidia GTX 970 card.
