« on: October 03, 2011, 01:51:30 PM »

Thank you to everyone that made BAM2011 happen, it was a big success and it seemed like everyone had a great time from what I witnessed.
I'll be going through the surveys later on to take feedback but if you want to leave any comments, stories, feelings here that's great too. :)

Er.....I won BB. >.>

Haha sorry man, they didn't actually write it on the bracket and I was out getting food when it happened so I only had to go by a notation of rounds someone jotted down that obviously wasn't what I thought it was. Fixing it now. :)

Congrats to everyone that made top 16 in SSF4 AE! So many good players in Melb! It was fantastic talking to everyone on the stream including the commentators.

Props to the everyone that commentated - very professional! IMO best SSF4AE commentary I've seen this year.

A big congratulations to the top 8 of SSF4 AE! TOP 3: Akira, Shang Tsung and Sol ~ amazing performance guys : )
EDIT: Big ups to: Vitriol, beast Makoto! The Fifth Ark on his first tourney performance, not too bad man! Was awesome watching Exis beast, he was on point with all his combos : D The Vega player in teams, I forget his name but I wonder who that guy is?!

Also props to the event organisers and everyone else that helped make this tourney happen. So Pro!

Why were Sydney's only two players matched up in pools and had to knock each other out to qualify for Sunday?

In the top 8? Inevitable.

Before top 8? Inexcusable.

They weren't. They both made it out of pools and met eachother in the semi finals pools, at that point we did everything we could to change the matchup despite being at no obligation to do so according to the rules however we weren't able to make the courtesy switch.

Thanks for your concern, but please try to get your accusations correct first.

Off the top of my head I believe George placed 9th

You may be under 'no obligation' to change anything but a little foresight would have avoided the whole situation. They may not have been in the same pools but they were in ones so if they both advanced they had to knock each other out to qualify.

Yes according to the rule book, you are under no obligation to do anything but it would be nice to look after the only two guys that made an effort to travel 800+ km to attend your event. It's understandable if there were 50+ from Sydney like at SS, but there was two. In the same situation, how would two guests from Japan feel about that bracket?

It's not about what anyone placed, there is a sense of achievement making it to the next day, and all factors considering, this should not have happened. I can understand your pride, and you guys have a lot to be proud of because BAM was a great event, but sometimes it's okay to say 'yeah we stuffed up'.

You're focusing on the wrong aspect of the situation, we didn't choose to not make the change because we were under no obligation. The change wasn't made because when it was brought to our attention we went and spoke to the two other players who would be affected by making such a change and one of the two was not comfortable with the swap. Thus we played the bracket as it was supposed to be played and did not artificially hack it so that the two Sydney guests wouldn't have to play each other.

There were 8 pools, 2 people from each pool progressed into a 16 man bracket and when that was whittled down to 8 we stopped and waited for Sunday. The only one way we could have avoided it would have been to put those two players in polar opposite pools, pairing one of them up against one of Melbourne's top seeds.

You are correct in that I could have avoided the situation before creating the initially seeded brackets, however the problem with that is that neither Shang Tsung nor Afterdeath pre-registered for BAM and thus I had no idea either of them were coming until well after those seeds were posted. At ANY point during that week if they had told me for sure that they were coming I could have altered the pools and given the affected players notice that their seeds had changed however in the case of Afterdeath I only found out he was in Melbourne from Shang Tsung on the Saturday of BAM.
As such I removed the seeding of the last two Melbourne pools and seeded the Sydney guests in their place, while keeping those players in the same pool (so that they wouldn't be disqualified by turning up to the wrong pool).

As a side note, looking very quickly at the seeds now, if I had known when pre-reg closed that Shang Tsung and Afterdeath were coming and we did change the seeds then both players would have played each other in the first round of the top 8 (if both made it out in winners or losers). Or one of them might not have made it out of pools at all due to playing different opponents. It's all theory, but the reality is it's the difference of one game at the most.

Pride is not an issue for me, if I make a mistake I'm more than willing to admit it, as I did with the pools for Shadowloo Showdown 2011. Those may not have been my fault, but I did make them. In this case I believe we did everything by the book, and no-one made any mistake. It is a shame, but it's not a stuff up. I'm afraid you'll just have to suck it up and move on.

In no way does Loki or the rest of the organizers deserve to be punished for this. I can definitely back up Loki in his efforts to avert this situation however he approached me and gave me the choice of playing against Afterdeath in the hope that he would avoid playing his fellow NSW peer in Shang Tsung. I had a very difficult decision to make and I'll be the first to admit that I completely despise the Gief matchup. The decision was never made based on prejudices against the NSW crew as I have the utmost respect for several of their players. It would have been nice to have 2 NSW players represent their state in the top 8 and I would have no qualms if that was the case.

I do apologize to both Shang and George for ultimately making such a selfish decision and you have every right to feel an injustice towards this outcome. It never once crossed my mind to think "Screw them! I rather see Melbourne players in top 8" but I felt that whoever eventually made top 8 deserved their place despite their state pride. If any of you have further issues with this, then take it up with me via PM. People should be aware that everything was done by the organizers as methodically as it possibly could to accomodate players' wishes.

While I'm a little bit salty over having to play Shangtsung in the end, in defense of the BAM organisers I would say the main problem was that our pools were pool G and H respectively. Chronologically, these 2 pools were the last ones ran for obvious reasons.

At the time all other matches, including qualifiers for the other pools, were already finalised. Hence it would be quite hard to find people to swap with. So maybe it just can't really be helped.
