Definitely sounds like a dicey connector pin on the button pot. Easiest fix is to clamp the connector in with a pair of pliars if its a bit loose, or replace the bottom of the connector at the end of the wire. Both of these options require you to crack the housing open though. Its very straight forward however - once you're digging around in there it will make sense as to how things are connected (and how they can fail from time to time).
